Deep Focus

Saxophonist Eric Person and I have been listening to music together for over 3 decades. We both love a musician who is The Total Package.

 

- You need to know the entire history of the music inside and out;

- You have to write, play and lead a band at the highest level;

- You gotta have chops on your instrument that make the other cats' heads spin;

- You need to be able to entertain a crowd, whether they came to hear some smokin' jazz or just canoodle in the back row.

 

If you can do one or two of those things really well, you're a total monster. But how many can do ALL of them as well as anyone? We can debate it all night but when day breaks, it's still going to be a pretty short list. One name that's going to be near the top: Rahsaan Roland Kirk.

 

Eric Person joined me at WKCR for a Deep Focus on Rahsaan in January of 2011. Once again, the WKCR archives did not fail. Treasures abound!

There aren’t many of them, those voices that can just reach down inside of you.  If you heard Jimmy Scott sing, you knew that you were in the presence of something extraordinarily rare and precious.  How many other people can you name who sang on a Top Ten hit, left the scene for 40 years and came back bigger and better than ever?  (NONE, that’s how many!).  Vocalist Nora McCarthy heard Jimmy Scott, deep in her soul.  In fact, she hears him still.

Notes? There's only 12 of 'em!  How much can you do with that?  More to the point, is there a way to approach them that hasn't been worked to death already? Of course there is; there always is.   But can you do it in a way that's passionate and sincere?  Can you tell a story that's new and fascinating?  Can you initiate a conversation that is cultivated and revealing?  You can if your name is Matthew Shipp; he does that again and again and again.  

 

And who does Matt look to as one of his musical forebears?  The names of Paul Bley, Steve Swallow and Jimmy Giuffre may not be household names these days (if they ever were) but they should be.  I mean, they are in Matt's house, maybe yours too.
