In the Jazz world of utterly distinctive individuals, trumpeter Woody Shaw still managed to stand out. He didn’t speak like everybody else, he didn’t move like everybody else (the hours of tai chi that he would do-- sometimes right in the audience of a performance venue-- might have had something to do with that), he didn’t think like everybody else and he certainly didn’t play like anybody else. When saxophonist Eric Anthony Person

and host Mitch Goldman were coming up, his live shows were not to be missed.

2017.05.17 William Hooker on Billy Bang 2 of 3

Billy Bang wasn’t called “Billy Bang” for nothing. He earned that name as a demolitions expert in Viet Nam but it was equally apt when he was blowing up the violin in searing explosions filled with joy and heartache. Few know this as well as drummer William Hooker who toured and recorded with Billy.

William Hooker has never released the recordings but he shares them with us in this Deep Focus from 2017 on Billy Bang.
