How is it possible for the hitting of a drum to convey a sense of awe? A feeling of absolute splendor? A state of moral conviction? An awareness of human possibility, of self-liberation? Plenty of people play drums but few inspire these feelings as Elvin Jones does. And few have made as close a study of Elvin as fellow drummer/conceptualist William Hooker.

….continued from below: in 1963, this was extraordinarily raw, radical drumming, saxophone (on a soprano, no less…who’d even thought of that instrument since Bechet?)—who pulled on the bass strings like this before Jimmy Garrison? Who was searching as hard as McCoy Tyner? It’s easy to forget…out of context, we all say “oh that’s Elvin doing his thing”…but in 1963 (year of my arrival on the planet) this was EXTREME drums.

What did Papa Jo Jones think when he heard his musical grandson Elvin….was he horrified? Confused? Dug it? Some stew of all three? Or something totally other? I know some older drummers like Buddy Rich had mixed feelings about what Elvin was doing—Context: this was VERY RADICAL, daring, extremely challenging

PPPPS - mixing host hard left and guest hard right is awesome

PS - Coltrane Live at Birdland changed my life at age 13. I heard Elvin Jones thrashing and crashing and fighting evil in the world, demolishing restrictions, ending limitations, scaring off evil spirits yet imbuing a sort of ‘evil’ to the proceedings himself…and I said That’s It, that’s what I want to TRY and do on my cheap rickety teen drum set. In minutes, I graduated from Mitch Mitchell (a great drummer) to JAZZ

The Elvin Jones gunslinger/cowboy movie is called “Zachariah” and it’s pretty out there, yet not as ‘out of character’ as one might think to see Elvin Jones starring in a cowboy movie….! I think Mr. Jones grew up loving cowboy movies and culture (he played acoustic guitar and loved singing cowboy songs—really…)

I meant BELOW, so now “below-below” I was saying there are very likely NO “Deep Focus” stinker episodes…

Above, I was responding to host MItch’s statement that there haven’t been any stinkers yet in the Deep Focus series/show.

No, as far as I can tell there have NOT been any stinkers yet. In the world of drums and jazz, every day “Elvin” is mentioned (first name basis, no less!)—But rarely is his enormous, dynamic body of work discussed and probed with this depth and understanding. How have I missed William Hooker? I’m now familiar with another great drummer, too. MItch, there are so many great episodes and series’ in these archives, I’ll have to take a year off, buy 30 pounds of coffee, and dig MANY more episodes.
